About Dr. Phil Williams: Pioneer in making NIRS work
The career of Dr. Phil Williams (First Class B.Sc. Honours, Chemistry, 1954; Ph.D., 1958, University of Wales at Aberystwyth) has been devoted to practical aspects of grains and their products, including development and application of large-scale analytical systems for quality assessment of cereals and derived products, identification of factors affecting their quality, and quality evaluation in grain legumes. His career began in Australia, followed by 37 years at the Canadian Grain Commission in Winnipeg, Canada, from which he retired in 2002. In 1970, he became the first Chemist-in-charge of the Canadian Western Red Spring (CWRS) Wheat Protein Segregation Operation of the Canadian Grain Commission.
From 1975 to 1989, Dr. Williams contributed expertise in grain technology and laboratory design and operation, during which he also introduced near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to the International Centre for Agriculture in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Syria. Technical missions and consulting have taken him to the Philippines, Japan, Brazil, Egypt, North Yemen, Algeria, Cyprus, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Astrakhan (Russia), Swaziland, China, Hong Kong, Morocco, Turkey, Sweden, Holland, Pakistan, Sudan, Ghana, Lebanon, South Africa, Mozambique, Uruguay, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Thailand, Hungary, Mexico, Paraguay, and Taiwan.
To improve efficiency in testing, Dr. Williams investigated and applied near-infrared reflectance (NIR) and transmittance (NIT) technology to the testing of grains, seeds, forages and other commodities. He has had one of the longest careers in the world of continuous experience with NIRS. In 1972, he received the second instrument ever manufactured, and introduced NIRS as the primary method of analysis for protein throughout Canada's wheat terminals in 1975-6. His persistence in working with the engineers in companies designing and manufacturing NIR instruments is credited with the ability of the early NIRS industry to grow into the multi-million dollar industry it is today. He introduced NIRS not only to Canada, but also to England, Australia, Russia and the Middle East.
Dr. Williams is the noted author of over 200 technical articles and two editions of a classic NIRS reference book.
About Dr. Diane Malley: Taking NIRS to the environment
Dr. Malley began her career as a Marine Biologist earning degrees in Zoology from the University of British Columbia (Honours BSc, 1964; MSc 1967) and the University of Michigan (PhD, 1972). From 1972 to 1975, she taught and did research on marine ecology in Malaysia funded by the Ford Foundation. She specialized in feeding ecology of mangrove swamp crabs that consume mangrove leaves. After a year at the University of Victoria, Dr. Malley joined the Freshwater Institute of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Winnipeg, Canada in 1976 where she worked on ecotoxicology involving experimentation on small whole lakes until 1997. From 1987 to 1996, she managed a research section comprised of 10 researchers. She has also held Adjunct Professor positions in two departments of the University of Manitoba.
Dr. Malley’s interests range widely from aquatic research to sustainable development, including scientific, environmental, and women’s issues. She has held Executive or Board positions in organizations including the Manitoba Environmental Council, Sahtu Land Claim Renewable Resources Board, National Council of Women of Canada, Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society, and The International Coalition for Land and Water Stewardship in the Red River Basin, and Learning for a Sustainable Future. She was appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada to the National Round Table on Environment and Economy from 2003 to 2005.
Introduced to NIRS in 1991, Dr. Malley explored application of the technology to the analysis of nutrients in sediments and particulate material in water of lakes. This was followed by application of NIRS to the analysis of agricultural and contaminated soils; biowastes including manures, composts and biosolids for nutrients; and wetland soils for carbon in the context of climate change.
Retiring from government in late 1997, Dr. Malley incorporated PDK Projects, Inc. of which she is the President.
In the field of NIRS, Dr. Malley is an author of 12 primary publications; 29 proceedings articles, book chapters, or published reports; 21 research reports, and has presented papers or posters at more than 30 international scientific conferences.
